May 18th
May has made a lot of progress over the last week. Considering the seriousness of her head injury the doctors are impressed that she can now communicate on a basic level some of the time. May is still sleeping most of the time, but she is working hard to recover.
Because May’s injury was to the left side of her brain, she will be working with physical, speech, and occupational therapists to regain control of her right side. On May 12th, a physical therapist and an occupational therapist helped her sit up and transferred her from her hospital bed to a wheelchair. May got to spend some time outside for the first time in 12 days.
On May 14th, some of May’s family and close friends spent her birthday with her at the hospital. They brought her presents and told her stories and jokes to make her smile. We all know that May loves parties, especially her own birthday party. When she is feeling better later this summer or early next fall we will have her postponed "White Party".
Monday we received some incredibly encouraging and exciting news. May was transferred from the hospital to a rehabilitation center in San Francisco! This begins her road to recovery. She will be working with speech therapists, physical therapists, and occupational therapists for three hours everyday.
Please keep May in your thoughts and prayers. May is going to need a lot of courage, strength, and perseverance as she recovers. As her communication skills improve she will also probably want more visitors. Though May can now have visitors, the rehabilitation center is limiting visitors to two at a time during hours that do not interfere with her therapy sessions. Please continue to contact Colleen or Cynthia for more information about visitation.
